Wastewater Workshop Summaries

Safety in Wastewater Systems

• This one day workshop includes instruction on a wide variety of wastewater related safety issues. topics to be covered include Water-borne Diseases, Confined Spaces, Trenching, Chlorine Handling, Laboratory and General safety concerns.

Wastewater Facilities Management

• This one day workshop will focus on the various aspects of management of wastewater treatment systems. Included in the discussion will be: General Management Practices, Personnel, Training, Planning, and Public Relations. Special emphasis will be given to Financial Management and Emergency Preparedness. Please bring a calculator as exercises may require calculations.

Biological Treatment

• This two day workshop will focus on the design and operation of all types of biological treatment systems including: Lagoons, Trickling Filters, and Activated Sludge facilities. Identification of problem conditions and corrective actions will be stressed. Hands-on problem solving case studies will be included. Attendees are requested to bring a calculator and a MS Wastewater Facilities Operations / Training Manual for reference.

Activated Sludge Treatment

• This two day workshop will focus on the design and operation of all types activated sludge treatment systems. Identification of problem conditions and corrective actions will be stressed.Hands-on problem solving case studies will be included. Attendees are requested to bring a calculator and a MS Wastewater Facilities Operations / Training Manual for reference.

Exam Preparation

• This three day workshop will review the MS Wastewater Facilities Operations / Training Manual in preparation for the wastewater certification exam. The workshop includes three classes ( I, II, III/IV ) of instruction with emphasis on biological treatment and math. The classes are designed for those operators that have attended a Short Course or are otherwise familiar with the material. Students should review the Training Manual prior to attending to obtain the most benefit from the class. Attendees are requested to bring a calculator, a MS Wastewater Facilities Operations / Training Manual and a notebook to class. The class is followed the next day by an exam in all four classes.

Advanced Treatment

• This workshop will focus on the treatment of wastewater for the conversion and/or removal of nitrogen. Nitrification / Denitrification and other methods of removal will be discussed. The workshop will include calculations of Oxygen requirements, Alkalinity, and Anoxic zones among other parameters.

NPDES Reporting

• This one day workshop will cover the common aspects of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, including the basis for effluent limitations and monitoring requirements. Instruction will include sampling techniques, and completion of Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR) forms. Attendees are encouraged to bring a calculator and a copy of their facility’s permit.

Lagoon Systems

• This one day workshop covers design, operation and maintenance of all types of lagoon systems. Included are: Facultative (Conventional), Aerated and Anaerobic lagoons. We will also discuss wetlands, overland flow, irrigation and sand filters as methods of upgrading lagoon systems.

Wastewater Math

• This two day workshop provides instruction in general mathematics and the specific equations used in all four wastewater classifications such as: Area, Volume, Population Equivalents, Detention Time, Pounds, Percent Removal, Sludge Age and more. The session is divided into two groups with Class I and II in one group and Class III and IV in a second group. The two days are not only a good refresher for certified operators but very beneficial to those preparing to take an exam. Be sure to bring pencils and a calculator!!

MWPCOA Short Course

• This four day class sponsored by the MS Water and Pollution Control Operator’s Association provides a review of the MS Operations / Training Manual in preparation for the certification exam which is offered at the end of the course. Separate instruction is provided in all four classes of certification. This course requires a registration fee paid to the MWPCOA. For registration information contact the MWPCOA at 601-857-0512.

MSRWA Workshop

• This three day workshop is co-sponsored by MDEQ and MSRWA. A variety of operation and maintenance topics are covered each year. Instructors include MSRWA staff, MDEQ staff as well as vendor representatives and engineers. A registration fee is required by MSRWA. For registration information contact MSRWA at 601-544-2735.

Laboratory Procedures

• This two day workshop is presented by the laboratory personnel at MDEQ. Instruction is provided in proper analytical procedures for common NPDES permit parameters including: BOD, TSS, Fecal Coliform, Chlorine Residual, pH, and Ammonia Nitrogen. Hands on instruction is included.This workshop has a limitation of 20-25 persons. We request that only persons working in a laboratory and conducting analysis attend this workshop.

Wastewater Disinfection

• This one day workshop will offer instruction in the most common methods of disinfecting wastewater effluents. Included in the discussions will be: Chlorination / Dechlorination; Ultraviolet Irradiation; and Ozonation. Design, equipment and operation and maintenance will be covered.

Introduction to Laboratory Procedures

• This one day workshop is presented by the environmental trainers and laboratory personnel at MDEQ. Instruction is provided in proper analytical procedures for common field and operational parameters including: Chlorine Residual, pH, and Dissolved Oxygen. Hands on instruction is included. Effluent monitoring analysis will be briefly discussed to introduce the operator to these laboratory procedures.

Collection System Management

• This one day workshop will focus on the operation and maintenance procedures of various aspects of a typical municipal collection system. Included in the discussion will be topics such as gravity sewers, pump stations, inflow and infiltration, sanitary sewer overflows (SSO) and emergency operations.

Biosolids Management

• In this one day workshop we will discuss the most common aspects of biological stabilization, dewatering and disposal of wastewater biosolids. The 40 CFR 503 regulations will be emphasized as they apply to land application and surface disposal, including monitoring, sampling and calculation procedures.

Wastewater Systems Security

• This one day workshop is presented through a grant from EPA for small municipal system security. The workshop will focus on performing hazard and vulnerability assessments on small wastewater systems using the VSAT and NETC assessment tools. Natural and manmade emergencies/disasters will be discussed. As a follow-up, the training staff will offer on-site assistance in completing vulnerability assessments at selected small municipal facilities.

Incident Command System (ICS)

• This one day workshop is presented through a grant from EPA for small municipal system security. Many incidents, whether major or minor, disasters and major emergencies require response from a number of different agencies. Regardless of size or the agencies involved in an incident, all require good management to ensure an effective response and efficient, safe use of resources. Common terminology is essential in any emergency management system, especially when diverse agencies are involved. When agencies have slightly different meanings for terms, it can lead to confusion and inefficiency. ICS takes accepted business practices and applies them to emergency response.Federal laws require use of ICS for persons responding to hazardous materials incidents.This workshop will introduce Public Works Employees to ICS structure, terminology and implementation.
