Sewer Line Work on Providence Street in Hattiesburg to Last Several Weeks

(JACKSON, Miss.) – Beginning this week Hercules, Inc. is replacing a sewer line beneath Providence Street adjacent to the Hercules facility located at 613 West 7th Street in Hattiesburg.   The work is expected to last several weeks and affects the use of approximately 1500 feet of Providence Street.

Sampling by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) in 2010 in the sewer along Providence Street led to a Corrective Action Order against Hercules which, among other items, addresses the sewer line.  Hercules has submitted a plan to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and MDEQ for the management of contaminated environmental media (such as soil or groundwater) that may be encountered during the sewer replacement effort. The plan also contains procedures to be followed for air monitoring during the sewer replacement activities to ensure the protection of workers and nearby residents. All construction activities will be implemented in accordance with city specifications and will be overseen by engineers for the City of Hattiesburg.  Environmental, health, and safety concerns will be conducted by Hercules and its consultants in accordance with the applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations and in coordination with EPA and MDEQ.

For questions about the sewer line work, residents can call the Project Manager at 601-310-5296 or the Hattiesburg Public Works Department at 601-545-4545.   For questions about the project, contact MDEQ’s Director of Community Engagement Melissa Collier at 601-961-5025.
