(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) lifted a water contact advisory Friday for portions of the Tallahatchie River and the Yazoo River in the City of Greenwood. The advisory was issued in February for a segment of the Tallahatchie River from the Money Road/N Grand Blvd bridge to its confluence with Yazoo River to the Roebuck Road bridge south of the Rising Sun community (see attached map). The advisory was issued due to a bypass which resulted in the discharge of untreated wastewater into the river. After the bypass ended, MDEQ began water sampling and recent results were below levels of concern.
MDEQ’s sampling results indicate that it is safe to resume water contact recreational activities such as swimming, wading, and fishing in these waters.
