MDEQ Lifts Water Contact Advisory for Hollis Creek in Oktibbeha County
(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has lifted a general water contact advisory issued May 13 for a section of Hollis Creek in Oktibbeha County from the City of Starkville’s Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 305 Sand Road to where Hollis Creek joins the Noxubee River. Water sampling by MDEQ staff indicates the water body has returned to normal levels.
MDEQ advises that people can now engage in water contact such as swimming or wading and can consume fish or anything else taken from these waters. The advisory was issued due to the rupture of an incoming six-inch line at the plant that resulted in sewage discharge entering Hollis Creek.
For more information the public can call MDEQ at 601-961-5171.
