MDEQ Issues Water Contact Advisory for Pelahatchie Creek Near Morton

(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a water contact advisory Tuesday for a section of Pelahatchie Creek near the City of Morton (see attached map).  The advisory is issued for Pelahatchie Creek from Highway 13 at Morton to where the creek crosses Highway 80 near the Town of Clarkburg.

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact such as swimming, wading, and fishing.  People should also avoid eating fish or anything else taken from these waters until further notice.

The advisory is being issued due to an ongoing bypass caused by the failure of a pump after a second pump was removed by the city for maintenance and repair at the city’s lift station number 1. The city is working on repairs and disinfecting the wastewater discharge.

MDEQ staff will collect samples after the pumps are repaired and monitor the water quality in the area.  The advisory may be revised as needed.
