MDEQ Issues Water Contact Advisory for Long Creek in Panola County

(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a water contact advisory Tuesday for a segment of Long Creek (or Peters Creek) in Panola County near Pope. The advisory extends from Highway 51 to its confluence with the Yocona River.

The advisory is being issued due to storm damage to the town’s wastewater system that resulted in a release of wastewater into the creek from the system’s lagoon. The town is working on repairs, but MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact such as swimming, wading, and fishing. People should also avoid eating fish or anything else taken from these waters until further notice.

MDEQ will monitor the water quality in the river and will revise the advisory as needed.
