MDEQ Issues Water Contact Advisory for Hollis Creek in Oktibbeha County
(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a general water contact advisory Sunday, May 13, for a section of Hollis Creek from the City of Starkville’s Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 305 Sand Road to where Hollis Creek joins the Noxubee River.
MDEQ, out of an abundance of caution, is issuing the water contact advisory for residents to avoid water contact recreation and consumption of anything caught in the area of the advisory.
The advisory is being issued to the rupture of an incoming six inch line at the plant that has resulted in sewage discharge entering Hollis Creek. The city is currently diluting the overflow and has bypass pumps in place. The city will have a contractor and additional pumps Monday.
MDEQ staff is monitoring the situation and working with local officials regarding the bypass. MDEQ staff will sample the creek beginning Monday to determine if the advisory area will need to be modified and when it can be lifted.
