MDEQ Issues Water Contact Advisory for Creek Near Pope

(JACKSON, Miss.) –The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a temporary water contact advisory Saturday for an unnamed tributary of Long Creek in Pope from Green Road until the confluence with Long Creek between Highway 51 and the railroad tracks.  This advisory is for the westernmost tributary on Green Road.

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact recreation such as swimming, wading, or fishing in these waters. People should also avoid eating fish or anything else taken from these waters until further notice.

The advisory is issued due to broken sewer line stream crossings in Pope.  The Town of Pope Sewer District is repairing the issues.  MDEQ staff has begun to monitor bacteria levels and water quality and will revise the advisory as needed.
