MDEQ Issues Four Water Contact Advisories
Two Other Advisories Also in Effect
(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), through its Beach Monitoring Program, issued water contact advisories Wednesday for four sampling stations.
These segments of beach are not closed; however, there may be an increased risk of illness associated with swimming in these areas.
MDEQ is working closely with local officials to advise residents that the water in the following locations may have high bacteria levels:
►Station 5 — Pass Christian West Beach — from Fort Henry Avenue east to Elliot Street.
►Station 8 — Gulfport West Beach — from Marie Avenue to Camp Avenue.
►Station 10 — Gulfport Central Beach — from Alfonso Drive to Arkansas Avenue.
►Station 10B — East Courthouse Road Beach — from Courthouse Road to Tegarden Road.
Advisories are still in effect for:
►Station 1 — Lakeshore Beach — from the Silver Slipper Casino eastward to Poinset.
►Station 2 — Buccaneer State Park Beach — the extent is from 100 yards west of the sign eastward to 100 yards east of the sign.
When water samples show that levels are safe for human contact, the advisories will be lifted. Swimmers are reminded that the Beach Task Force has a standing recommendation that swimming not occur during or within 24 hours of a significant rainfall event.
