MDEQ Issues Contact Advisory
Four Other Advisories Remain in Effect
(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), through its Beach Monitoring Program, issued a water contact advisory Tuesday for Station 11 in Gulfport. Four other advisories previously issued are still in effect. These segments of beach are not closed; however, there may be an increased risk of illness associated with swimming in these areas.
MDEQ is working closely with local officials to advise residents that the water in the following location may have high bacteria levels:
►Station 11 — Gulfport East Beach — from Tegarden Road east to Anniston Avenue.
These stations remain under advisory:
►Station 1 — Lakeshore Beach near Lakeshore Drive — from the Silver Slipper Casino east to Poinset.
►Station 2 – Buccaneer State Park Beach — the extent is from 100 yards west of the sign eastward to 100 yards east of the sign.
►Station 7A — Long Beach — from Oak Gardens Avenue to Girard Avenue.
►Station 9 — Gulfport Harbor Beach — from 20th Avenue east to Thornton Avenue.
Swimmers are reminded that the Beach Task Force has a standing recommendation that swimming not occur during or within 24 hours of a significant rainfall event.
