MDEQ Issues Closure for Segment of Beach in Bay St. Louis
(Jackson, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), through its Beach Monitoring Program, issued a preemptive beach closure Wednesday for a section of beach in Bay St. Louis:
- Station 4 — Bay St. Louis Beach — from the Box Culvert to Ballantine Street.
MDEQ advises residents not to enter the water or consume any seafood collected from these nearshore waters until further notice. Beginning today MDEQ will monitor the water and lift the closure when bacteria levels indicate conditions are safe for water contact.
This segment of beach has been closed due to a sanitary sewer overflow at a manhole cover on Ramoneda Street caused by excessive rainfall. Overflow from the manhole cover reached the beach at the box culvert.
