MDEQ Issues Beach Closures in Biloxi and Pass Christian

(Jackson, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), through its Beach Monitoring Program, issued a preemptive beach closure Monday for a section of beach in Biloxi from Beauvoir east to Sadler Beach Drive. This section of beach does not correspond with a beach monitoring station. A closure was also issued for Station 7, Pass Christian East Beach, which spans from Espy Avenue to Hayden Avenue.
The closure in Biloxi is being issued due to a sewage bypass at the lift station located at Brady Drive. The one in Pass Christian is the result of a bypass caused by a lift station power outage.

MDEQ advises residents not to enter the water or consume any seafood collected from these nearshore waters until further notice. MDEQ will monitor the water and lift the closure when bacteria levels indicate conditions are safe for water contact.

The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, which performs water sampling of the Mississippi Gulf Coast beaches for MDEQ, notifies the agency when an area has returned to acceptable levels.
