MDEQ Awards Solid Waste Assistance Grants to Forrest County, and to the City of Hattiesburg, as well as a Solid Waste Planning Grant to Lamar County

(Jackson, Miss.) — The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) awarded solid waste assistance grants to the following:

• Forrest County a grant of $17,692 that will be used for an unauthorized dumpsite cleanup program and a white goods collection program;
• City of Hattiesburg a grant of $75,000 that will be used for a household hazardous waste collection program.
• Lamar County a solid waste planning grant of $16,700 that will be for its solid waste management plan update.

Cities and counties may apply for Solid Waste Assistance Grants through the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. These grants are used by local communities for programs to prevent and clean up unauthorized dumps; to aid in hiring local solid waste enforcement officers; for public education efforts on solid waste disposal and recycling; and to establish programs for the collection of white goods, bulky wastes and recyclables.
